Are you a candidate?
Guidelines, endorsed by American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), recommend metabolic and bariatric surgery for:
- Obesity grade II or more (≥ 35 kg/m2) and obesity grade I (between 30-35 kg/m2) if type 2 diabetes or comorbidities unamenable to be improved with medical treatment. Asian ethnicity carries additional risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases for lower BMIs, and so threshold for bariatric surgery should be different, which highlights the need of an integrated evaluation, not totally dependent on BMI.
- As a bridge to other surgical procedures in obese patients, as for abdominal wall hernia surgery, joint arthroplasty, and organ transplantation
Who is not candidate for surgery?
- Age beyond the limits of internal rules of each country
- Patients not fit for surgery (whose risks are superior to benefits)
- Diseases that might compromise future safety of the patient (not controlled inflammatory bowel disease, other auto-immune diseases)
- Drug abuse
- Pregnancy
- Inability for understanding the procedure and implications.
